Gunfire & Deaths Reported from Cancun & Playa Del Carmen

Jan. 17, 2017
Unfortunate realities from Cancun… today:

“The U.S. Consulate urges all U.S. citizens to follow local authorities’ warnings and directives and consult with their hotels before leaving the premises.”

The problems in Quintana Roo are expanding beyond the Playa Del Carmen killings of 4 foreigners two days ago at a music festival.

In spite of hopeful optimistic reports by expats who contradict the Consulates advice,
there’s now confirmation of the very real problems**

“The U.S. Consulate General Merida informs U.S. citizens of gunfire exchanges in various locations in downtown Cancun January 17, 2017. Local authorities activated a “Code Red” alert and urged residents to shelter in place. ”

“The U.S. Consulate urges all U.S. citizens to follow local authorities’ warnings and directives and consult with their hotels before leaving the premises.”

First person Twitter reports from Cancun today:
“Shootings reported at prosecutor’s office and police station in Cancun.”

“There’s been 2 shootings in the 3 days I’ve been in Cancun.”

**My wife’s Yucatecan friends living in Cancun earlier reported today hearing significant automatic gunfire…

My wife’s friends are now reporting gunfire exchanges at over 10 locations in Cancun today, including the Prosecutors office & Cancun Police Station.

The Cancun grapevine says there are 2 Narco groups from Acapulco fighting to claim turf to sell drugs in Q. Roo.

    holy shit!

The shooting incident at the music festival in Playa del Carmen has been on the news a lot here in Canada. I’ve heard nothing about Cancún though. Both are popular winter escapes for Canadians so this is really disturbing. The pacific coast resort towns aren’t too safe anymore either.
