Steve, I have a question with no relevance to your blog post but could not find any email address for you. A friend in Playa Del Carmen area tells me the Federal Government is advertising a special offering in the newspaper for the month of June to nationalize any car in Mexico for $2000. including plates at the Chetumal Belize border. Any way that I could check this our? Agents I have talked to in other parts of Mexico do not know of this but tell me that they don’t doubt it because its Mexico.

      Hi Mike,
There may be a special Amparo in place for the month of June…

Where did you read this? *We have friends who need help on this issue.*

See our main article on Importing and Driving Cars in Mexico at: https://yucalandia.com/driving-in-mexico-issues-fun/importing-driving-a-car-in-mexico/

There was a Customs Broker in Chetumal who was handling these in the past, and you could contact him: Gerardo Uc.

Note that there are ongoing internet reports from 3 different people who gave Sr. Uc $$$ and their car’s paperwork between August 2013 – Feb. 2014, and he has given them nothing (yet?). Sr. Uc is not answering their emails or returning their phone calls.

      ???
Messy messy area of the import law,
      steve

Steve, I have been going back and forth to Mexico for the past 8 years. I have come to rely on a local Mexican for most of that time to take care of my property and transportation. He had been nationalizing vehicles for some of the local people in Puerto Aventuras by traveling to the US border and is very well known both locally and in the Poblado. His name in Antonio Hernandez. He had previously offerred to do the nationalization for me when he did others at the US border. While I was there in May he told me that the newspaper was carrying adds from the federal government advertising this could be done for 2k but only for the month of June at the Chetumal Belize border. He has taken all the documentation, tip, title, pictures and identification. He called me today and told me that my documentation was accepted and it is all in process now and that he will give me the wiring instructions to send money to their account. It won’t be issued until paid. While I cannot conceive of him deceiving me as our families have become great friends, I am trying to find some confirmation which would make me sure that he is not possibly being duped which is why I asked. I will try to get a publication name or something that I can relay to you regarding this but at this point I do not know where it was advertised. Certainly, if I go through with it I will let you know how I make out.

Just an update on importing my car. I am told that the advertisement of the opportunity and the process is occuring in Chetumal. I have sent my friend the $2k and he is told that it should take about two weeks to complete. Fingers crossed.
